japan-minka: Kawagoe Shotengai in Showa 30 (1955) While much of Japan modernized through the Showa-era, Kawagoe’s main shotengai stayed locked in the Meiji-era. While much of the surrounding areas have been modernized, the shotengai looks much the same. It’s worth the day trip from Tokyo accordingly.
